On July 21, 1944 US troops landed on two of Guam’s beaches – Asan and Agat. After two and a half years of Japanese occupation and dominance in the Pacific, American forces set out to recapture what had been a US territory since 1898.
Having just earned a hard-won victory on Saipan, US troops pushed on. Fighting through enemy fire from plateaus above the landing beaches, mines, and nighttime banzai attacks, US forces gained ground and moved inland. It took 55,000 American troops 20 days to reclaim the island. 1,435 were killed or missing in action. 5,650 were wounded. Most of the 19,000 Japanese on the island were believed to have been killed.
